唐居文化中心 TANGJU CULTURAL CENTER

This interior design project for the renowned clothing brand TANGJU is located in the suburbs of Taipei, Taiwan. The ultimate goal of this project was not only to reflect the values and worldview of the TANGJU brand culture, but also to provide a quiet and mindful place for people to learn and practice the Chan (Zen) philosophy of life.

The original site of the project was a military warehouse with 80 years of history. The wooden structure of the house was very old and because of its original function as a warehouse, there were only a few windows, so the interior space was very dark and damp. The clothing showroom area was designed by our team as an open space, and the original load-bearing structure was changed with steel structure technology. The space is given a completely new birth: no longer being dull and cold, but welcoming visitors with a lightly and warmly atmosphere.

At the back of the store is a classroom for meditation and philosophical classes on Chan (Zen). It is a spiritual place of solemnity and tranquility, where our designer, Zhang Xing, has emphasized the ritual aspect and warmth aura of the place, and the light beams introduced by the wooden roof convey a sense of purity similar to being in a temple.

Our designer wished to respect the history of the building while renovating it. The charming wooden structure of this traditional building reveals the trace of the past. Therefore, the design aspiration is not only to reuse the old building, but to continue to grow new spatial forms in this historical space. This willingness to reuse the old architecture, which was just waiting its fate of demolition, testifies of our profound respect for traditions and contemporaneity.

Design project completed in March 2018.
