RETREAT

Wuyishan Tea Immersion
A Pilgrimage into the Living Wisdom of Tea
April 18-27, 2027

To enjoy this web experience in the best possible way, we kindly suggest exploring it from a computer.

Our journey intention

We have long dreamed of weaving a tea journey in Wuyishan, and our hearts are full of gratitude to finally share it with our community. We warmly invite you to GUANYI 观易 RETREAT, a rare immersion in the sacred Wuyi mountains of Fujian Province, from 18 to 27 April 2027. This retreat unfolds during one of the most auspicious and vibrant moments of the year: the spring tea harvest season, within the precious energetic window of Guyu 谷雨 (Grain Rain), the solar term that marks the awakening of abundance and the beginning of the tea harvest. It is a season when mountains breathe mist, tea leaves awaken, and nature offers its fullest vitality.

Wuyishan is a UNESCO World Heritage sanctuary, revered for the rare union of majestic natural beauty and profound cultural legacy. Sandstone cliffs rise above winding rivers, ancient forests shelter rare endemic species, and mist-covered valleys hold a timeless silence. For centuries, these mountains have welcomed monks, Daoist sages, healers, poets, and hermits seeking contemplation, wisdom, and harmony with the living world.

Wuyishan is also celebrated as a precious embodiment of tea culture. It is the cradle of the legendary Yancha 岩茶, Wuyi Rock Tea, whose roots draw strength from mineral-rich soils, steep cliffs, pure mountain waters, and mists. In these sacred ravines, tea craftsmanship has been refined through generations into an art of patience and true devotion.

GUANYI 观易 is the name we have chosen for this journey. Guan 观 means to contemplate with an open heart, to truly see beyond appearances. Yi 易 refers to the eternal movement of change, as expressed in the Yijing 易经, the sacred Book of Changes. GUANYI 观易 RETREAT is an invitation to embrace transformation and impermanence, and meet each moment with presence amid the ever-changing spring landscapes of Wuyishan.

To be in Wuyishan during harvest season is to witness a community deeply attuned to subtle rhythms. Tea artisans read Nature as an open book, sensing the eternal dance of the Five Elements through rain, light, mist, and the quiet whispers of the land. Every gesture responds to Mother Earth. Every day is guided by timing, intuition, and care, and we will have the privilege of experiencing this living wisdom firsthand.

This once-in-a-lifetime immersion is devoted to tea medicine, ancestral wisdom, and heartfelt encounters with remarkable tea artisans, masters, hermits, and artists who welcome us with rare generosity. Each walks a different path, yet all share a sincere bond with tea as an embodied way of life. We will be welcomed into tea gardens, workshops, temples, and hidden mountain places rarely accessible to foreign travelers.

Through this retreat, we do not seek merely to learn about tea. We seek to learn from tea and from those who live in deep relationship with it. Listening to its rhythms, and its subtle language, tea becomes a guide toward humility, clarity, and inner alignment. We open space for 16 kindred spirits who feel called to walk with reverence and intention, wishing to deepen their connection to ancient wisdom, tea, and all that quietly lies beyond.

Our journey essence

Consciously curated journey

We are not a travel agency, but storytellers, bridge-builders, and companions on this path. This all-inclusive retreat has been lovingly shaped through deep immersion in the land, in close collaboration with tea teachers, farmers, and artists. Every element of the experience has been thoughtfully woven with respect for local rhythms, ancestral knowledge, and the souls who welcome us. It is an invitation to live something rare, sincere, and deeply rooted.

Tea MEDICINE

Tea will be our ultimate teacher throughout the immersion. Rooted in the ancient medicinal tradition of this sacred plant, we will nourish body, mind, and spirit with exceptional teas from the Wuyi Mountains and across China, carefully sourced by our tea master, Liu Laoshi. Learning from tea farmers and various teachers, we will gather in the tea gardens for sacred rituals and moments of quiet presence, allowing each cup to deepen our connection with tea.

Nature wisdom

师造化 Shízàohuà  “Nature is our Master.” In the spirit of this ancient Chinese teaching, we will walk with humility and reverence. Nature becomes our guide, a living and sacred force that teaches us how to listen, observe, and move in harmony with life. Amid the ever-changing landscapes of the Wuyi Mountains and their vibrant rivers, we slow down to attune ourselves to the rhythms of the Earth and explore the deep bond local communities have long held with tea.

Slow pace

“Less is more” is one of our guiding principles. We choose depth over haste, valuing meaningful time on the land and with local communities rather than rushing from place to place. This journey has been designed with spaciousness and care, allowing time for integration through meditation, qigong, journaling, and quiet reflection. Each day invites presence, offering the chance to fully immerse in Nature and gently step away from the pace of the modern world.

Inner alchemy

We will explore Chinese wisdom traditions through the Five Elements of traditional Chinese medicine, Bazi astrology, and Fengshui as pathways for personal cultivation. Guided by the Way of Tea, Daoist harmony, and Chan/Zen philosophy, we will deepen inner harmony and balance. In these sacred landscapes, long cherished by hermits, monks, and seekers, we will be gently guided into the spiritual beating heart of China.

HEARTFELT CONNECTIONS

We will gather a group of sixteen mindful participants for this transformative journey, creating a space of trust, presence, and sincere connection. Each day, we will come together in circle to share, reflect, and nurture our collective spirit. This sense of community and mutual care will lie at the heart of the experience, echoing the way of life in the ancient tea mountains, where collaboration and collective well-being have long shaped daily life.

Rooted wellbeing

Guests will be gently supported by the subtle arts of Yangsheng, the ancient practice of cultivating vitality. Beyond the sharing of exquisite medicinal teas, we will explore gentle purification through natural handcrafted incense, traditional herbal blends, and other time-honored practices of TCM. Wholesome, earth-rooted meals and grounding snacks, prepared with respect for Nature and its rhythms, will support a deeply rejuvenating experience.

Immersive lodging

We have carefully selected a refined sanctuary nestled among the mountains of Wuyishan, designed to support deep rest and restoration after each day’s experiences. We will be welcomed into a peaceful luxury hotel, ideally located near the national reserve, the tea gardens of our tea farmers, and the sites of our cultural and mountain explorations. With its restorative spa, and serene atmosphere, it offers the perfect space to rest, unwind, and replenish.

Healing ARTS

We deeply believe in the nurturing power of art. The ancient Chinese character for “Art,” 藝 (Yì), evokes the image of a human planting a tree, symbolizing growth, renewal, and vital life force. Throughout the journey, we will engage in unique creative explorations guided by various teachers and  artisans: tea craft, pottery, sacred music, intuitive painting, free movement, and more. Each practice has been thoughtfully woven to ignite our inner creative fire.

Our JOURNEY ITINERARY

Please note that the schedule may adapt to day-to-day weather conditions and the availability of our tea farmers during the harvest season, honoring the natural rhythm of the place.

THE HUMANS BEHIND THE JOURNEY

This journey has been carefully designed and curated by three souls united by a sincere devotion to ancient Chinese culture and tea wisdom. Pauline Ferrières and Zhang Xing, French and Chinese co-founders of DEYI based in Beijing, have dedicated their life’s work to sharing a nuanced and embodied vision of China, rooted in places and people, honoring the voices of those who live in harmony with Nature, and revealing traditional knowledge as living medicine for our times. This path is deeply shared by their close friend and Canadian teacher Jade Brunel, with whom they now celebrate their third collaborative retreat in China. Born from friendship, trust, and a shared reverence for the timeless teachings of China, this journey is the flowering of a bond patiently woven over the years.

Jade Brunel is the founder of WAOTEA, an online space and educational platform dedicated to tea culture, where she curates and shares teas and objects sourced from conscious farmers and artists across Asia. Jade has traveled extensively to China, Japan, Thailand, and Laos, deepening her connection with tea through study and collaboration with tea farmers. Rooted in her passion for Chinese culture, metaphysics, and the healing arts, Jade draws from a rich background in tea studies, creative writing, mindfulness meditation, Bazi astrology, biodynamic psychology, qigong, and somatic practices. She facilitates online courses, workshops and retreats that explore personal and collective healing through tea ritual, elemental embodiment, astrology, and creative exploration. Jade supports her community in navigating life’s transitions; infusing, creating, dying, transforming. In 2022, Jade published her first book, Tea, Remembering the Essence of Life, created in collaboration with artists who share her reverence for tea, Nature, and Chinese wisdom. This creative journey led her to meet Pauline, sparking a profound friendship and the co-creation of exclusive retreats in China. During this new immersion, Jade will facilitate several meditative and creative practices to support the transformative experience.

HEARTFELT TESTIMONIES

Jade, Pauline, and Zhang Xing have woven together two deeply meaningful retreat immersions in China over the past years. In Fall 2024, they guided a journey to Xishuangbanna in Yunnan, the birthplace of tea, offering a profound immersion into tea culture and the ancient traditions of the indigenous Bulang and Dai peoples. In the summer of 2025, they welcomed a new group into the mountains of Guizhou for a creative immersion. Living within a community of Dong women weavers, participants stepped into the quiet rhythms of rural daily life, sharing time and space with the women who keep these ancestral textile traditions alive. Each journey unfolds as a space of connection, to the land, to living cultures, and to one’s inner landscape. Here are a few heartfelt reflections from those who experienced these rare moments.

“This incredible experience allowed me to see China’s true colors — a potent blend of vibrancy, sacred reverence, beauty, and delightful wonder. I honestly believe that I would not have been able to witness and sense these tender moments with locals, the land, and their way of living on any other trip. This highly curated, bespoke experience is truly a trip of a lifetime. There’s truly no way I could have experienced all of the incredible moments on this trip on my own with my own planning — not a chance! Being able to fully trust each of the guides / facilitators and receive this experience fully was beyond what I could have envisioned. Can’t recommend this experience enough, there simply aren’t enough words to express how magical every detail was thought through and felt!”

K.

“This journey was so intentionally and thoughtfully crafted, and lead by such inspirational souls… I will be so eternally grateful to be a part of it. To be in a land of deep reverence to Nature and its roots, and to see the continued love and respect for Earth, its inhabitants, and ancestral connections, is very humbling. Having such unique opportunities to explore the land, immerse yourself in ancient traditions, to mingle among the warm people, and to share together in rituals and ceremonies has all been life changing, eye opening, and soul awakening. I thank, from the depths of my being, Pauline, Jade, Zhang Xing, and everyone who made this journey possible, by deepest gratitude.

I am still, and will forever, be reeling in the feels of it all.”

M.

This retreat was beyond anything I could have imagined—an experience so profound, it’s hard to put into words. Every moment felt intentionally crafted, yet effortlessly flowing, like a dream unfolding in real time. From the misty morning walks to tea rituals under sacred trees, from hands-on artistry to witnessing ancient traditions come alive, every experience was layered with depth, beauty, and meaning.

What made it truly special, though, was the way we were held—so gently, so completely. Every detail was considered, from the smallest comforts to the grandest gestures. It wasn’t just a retreat; it was a portal into another way of being, a reminder to slow down, listen, and truly be.

I came back with more than memories—I came back transformed.

E.

“Sometimes it’s hard to believe glowing testimonials, and a little skepticism is natural. I can honestly say this immersion lives up to every word. It’s life-changing, not just for the destinations, but for the depth, intention, and heart behind every moment. The instructors are incredibly supportive throughout; from pre-trip anxieties to anything needed during the immersion. Every activity feels intentional, with a perfect balance of structured experiences and free time for reflection. I am deeply grateful to have been able to join this journey. Beyond the learning and experiences, I formed friendships I believe will last a lifetime, gained a renewed perspective on life and culture, and felt a profound sense of connection. This is more than a trip; it’s a soulful investment in yourself and in understanding the world.

J.

“This immersion opened so many doors within me, many I wasn’t even aware I had closed. Journeying to the birthplace of tea with Jade, Pauline & Zhang Xing felt like journeying to the depths of the heart — loving, challenging, and met with a warm embrace. Not only were we continually learning from their personal wisdom, but they also helped facilitate, create, and translate the teachings from indigenous communities and the ancient land itself. This trip was the perfect blend of curation and connection. Not only did I feel completely taken care of, I also had the space to be fully present and truly connect with the communities we were visiting and learning from. Thank you for bringing this once-in-a-lifetime experience to life. Thank you for being our guides, and for walking alongside us as students. I will remember it forever.

T.

“The experience was beyond any expectations. It began with a very carefully selected group of participants, perhaps it was fate. It was truly impressive to see how such a diverse group could form such a deep and unique connection. Communication and support flowed naturally; it felt as if I had known these people for a long time.  Throughout the journey, you could feel how much care, energy, and intention had been devoted to creating each moment. I was especially touched by the attention to small details. The tea ceremonies, each with its own theme and location, elevated the entire experience to another level. They allowed us to dive deeply into the world of tea from different perspectives. The people we met along the way were truly unique and inspiring, giving me a strong motivation to continue growing.

A.

“I did not expect the retreat to transform me so profoundly, but it did. I left China with the quiet certainty that a part of my soul now belongs to its rivers, its people, its stillness and its sounds. Every step of the journey filled me with awe. And that sense of wonder continues to live within me.”

S.

“Everything on this retreat was perfectly curated. I don’t know anyone else who could organize this trip with such incredible attention to detail better than the three of you. Your energy, skills, knowledge, and attention to detail, as well as every single activity and location you chose, were more than perfect. They were magical, beyond this world and realm. I am so grateful to you. “

A.

“This was an incredible journey beyond any expectations. The program was curated with so much attention and love. Jade, Pauline & Zhang Xing guided us with an open heart sharing precious knowledge but also gently guiding us without interfering in rediscovering our true nature, in connection with nature, the elements and the wisdom of tea.  The journey felt very authentic and I appreciated all the amazing local people we met that shared a precious moment of their life with us and brought us closer to their culture.  The connection between the participants and our guides was sincere and it felt like one big family.”
