This project is located in the outer city of Beijing where a dense population live. During the day, the majority of adults go to the city center for work, leaving the elderly people and children behind them. At night and on weekends, it is the time for families to enjoy life together. The residents wanted a shopping mall that really responds to their needs. Thus, the design project relies on three pillars regarding the residents’ expectations: building a neighborhood social circle, enjoying market life, experiencing art.
The exploding online consumption in the recent years makes the traditional retail entity businesses face unprecedented difficulties and challenges. But a lot of consumers testify that they regret the lack of direct communication during their online shopping experience. Thus, we believe there is still hope for physical retail businesses, as far as we design spaces for gathering to build connection among people. More and more consumers are looking for true and authentic shopping experiences.
Moreover, in our contemporary consumerist and individualist societies, people are used to being indifferent to each other, focusing on their own path. In shopping malls, people are either working, shopping and eating, or moving back and forth between various spaces, without connecting with each other. There is no place to stop, sit down and catch your breath – those places reinforce urban isolation. Creating a space celebrating nature and building social circle is the perfect antidote to this disease.
On the top floor of the mall, we create a space where sunlight, eco-gardens and a peaceful lifestyle could be shared. Our designer combined installation art and architecture to create a huge forest that runs through several floors, with a canopy that reaches the botanical garden on the roof. Under the trees are scattered themed restaurants, bars, small galleries and theaters, pop-up stores, bookstores and craft workshops, that together form a unique and vibrant social circle of life.
Our designer created an open-space so that people can move freely. It also allows all stores to feel this atmosphere of people gathering together. Everyone who arrives here feels comfortable, at ease and relaxed. It is a space where people wish to stay and be inspired. People can hang out, play, eat and drink, or work at a desk. It is an oasis of life in the metropolis, a living place to gather, a place that makes you feel at home.
